Quiara Torres is a self-taught multimedia artist from New York City. Her practice incorporates painting, installation and musical composition, exploring ancestral traditions of the Americas & Africa, challenging the aesthetic of colonial legacies. Salvaging burlap and produce sacks, the waste products of colonial imports her work re-contextualizes the discarded into sacred art objects. Directed by surrealist ideas and intuitive interpretations, Quiara’s work playfully points to hidden forces of symbolism by way of artistic clairvoyance; examining the natural world as she transmutes herself through animal portraits, while also echoing the iconography of the divine feminine and other forms of spiritual tribute.
