Simchowitz is pleased to present Grand Style X, Irvin Pascal’s first solo exhibition in our West Hollywood location (8255 Beverly Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90048). Pascal is best known for his monochromatic work, abstract painting style, strong music references and exploration in material creation such as Pascollar (clay mixed with his hair). In Grand Style X, the artist focuses on refining his craft, resulting in a new chapter he refers to as “style x”.
With this body of work, Pascal transitions into using color to showcase a more emotive side of his practice, and articulate the feeling state experienced while pausing to examine one’s surroundings—the presence of nature. The artist meditates on his fascination with the cyclical role patterns play in his work and life, how patterns are used as a language, a necessary means of communication. The reappearance of totemic figures is a pattern that can be seen as reference to his African and Caribbean heritage, just as the titles of the paintings are based on patterns and notes preformed on the African drum.
Grand Style X is on view from December 3rd - 23rd, 2022, with an artist reception on Saturday, December 17th from 4PM-6PM.
Irvin Pascal’s (b.1987, London, UK) work centers on identity, diaspora, and imbued meaning, with equally brutal and inviting imagery. Taking formal cues from luminaries like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Julian Schnabel, Pascal aggressively creates his own visual language by combining dark hues with powerful, confident gestures. Pascal stealthily and gracefully fabricates his paintings and sculptures from a wide range of transmuted materials. His works are as much three-dimensional records of performance as they are staggeringly elegant, raw, and beautiful.
